Walking as Jesus Walked: Message and Method

Walking as Jesus Lesson 1

Use the following thoughts and questions to have a spiritual conversation as a family. Don’t emphasize having the right answer, but focus on spending time discussing the Word as a family.

SCRIPTURE

John 1:37-39, Matthew 6:19, 31-33, John 13:15

SESSION SUMMARY

We started a series called “Walking as Jesus Walked.” What if, tomorrow, Jesus woke up in your bed instead of you? He went to your school? He assumed your class schedule? Went to your sports practice? Hung out with your friends? Your parents are his parents, yours friends his friends, your pain his pain, your bully his bully. Your problems, his problems. What if for one day, Jesus lives your life with his heart? What if…? What would that look like?

As we look at what Jesus taught it was about forgiveness, holiness, keeping our heart on eternity, and that Jesus came to serve. Jesus method was all about being with people, he challenged the religious snobs but he showed patience and compassion with sinners and outcasts teaching them to repent and believe and he gave them dignity. We are then challenged that this model is the same one we should put into practice and are faced with the big questions will we follow the King who came to save us with all out hearts. Jesu teaches he gets all of us or we get none of him.

In this teaching we challenged our students to adopt the message and method of Jesus as they seek to live out a life marked by Christ. This isn’t easy and they may be thought of as crazy but it is absolutely worth it!

We also encouraged our students that none of us get this right 100% of the time and Jesus shows us grace and forgiveness, but he is also working in us to make us more like him as we grow; and the more we grow like him the more we can act like him.

DISCUSSION QUESTION

  2. Do ever feel like something is missing from Jesus’ teaching?
  3. Do you think any methods of Jesus were radical? Are any missing in how we do ministry today?
  4. Do you find it hard to believe that you can act like Jesus? Why?
  5. How can you live out a lifestyle of love and compassion to people around you.
