Silence

November 13, 2022 Speaker: Jordan Gowing Series: 1 Samuel | Looking for the True King

Topic: Sunday Morning Teaching Passage: 1 Samuel 28:3–25

How do we respond when God is silent? Join us this Sunday at CrossWinds Church in Spencer as we consider the answer from 1 Samuel 28.

Sermon Discussion

  1. What is one takeaway from the sermon and one question that you had after hearing the sermon?
  2. Read 1 Samuel 3:1, 19–4:1; 28:3. What is the significance of Samuel dying?
  3. Read 1 Samuel 28:3; Genesis 3:5. Why did God prohibit necromancy? In what ways are the promises of the occult similar to the lie of the serpent in the Garden?
  4. Read 1 Samuel 28:6–7. Why does Saul seek out a medium? What should he have done instead?
  5. Read 1 Samuel 28:10. Here we see Saul invoke God’s name in assurance that he won’t follow God’s Word. What does this say about Saul’s view of God? What are some ways that we are tempted to do the same?
  6. Read 1 Samuel 28:16; Jonah 3. What should have been Saul’s response to God’s silence and Samuel’s message?
  7. Read Hebrews 3:12–15. What is the warning of this passage? What is the danger of hardening your heart? What are some ways that you can listen to and obey the voice of the Holy Spirit today?

Transformation Stories

  1. Take some time as a group to share stories of how you have seen God at work in your life or the lives of others. Alternatively, take turns sharing your testimony with your group to celebrate God’s saving and transformative work in your life.
