Grace is Not Too Good to Be True

November 20, 2022 Speaker: Jordan Gowing Series: 1 Samuel | Looking for the True King

Topic: Sunday Morning Teaching Passage: 1 Samuel 29:1–11, 1 Samuel 30:1–31

Is the idea of grace too good to be true? Join us this Sunday at CrossWinds Church in Spencer as we consider the answer from 1 Samuel.

Sermon Discussion

  1. Conversation Starter: What are you thankful for?
  2. What is one takeaway from the sermon and one question that you had after hearing the sermon?
  3. Read 1 Samuel 29:1–30:8. What eventually gets David to return to the Lord? How does God use similar situations in our lives to draw us near to him? What are some ways that God has been at work for your good even when you didn’t want anything to do with him at the time?
  4. Read 1 Samuel 30:1–8; 28:3–10. How are Saul and David similar in these chapters? What is the key difference between the two of them? What can we learn from this?
  5. Read 1 Samuel 30:11–20, cf. v. 8. What are some ways that these verses show us that God keeps his promises? How is this an encouragement to you today?
  6. What are some ways that God keeps his promises with the incarnation and the cross?
  7. Read 1 Samuel 30:23. How does David respond to God’s grace and faithfulness? What should our response be this week?

Transformation Stories

  1. Take some time as a group to share stories of how you have seen God at work in your life or the lives of others. Alternatively, take turns sharing your testimony with your group to celebrate God’s saving and transformative work in your life.
