Trust in the Lord, Not Yourself!

November 6, 2022 Speaker: Jordan Gowing Series: 1 Samuel | Looking for the True King

Topic: Sunday Morning Teaching Passage: 1 Samuel 27:1–12, 1 Samuel 28:1–2

Join us this Sunday at CrossWinds Church in Spencer as we hear a message from 1 Samuel that we always need to hear: trust in the Lord, not yourself!

Sermon Discussion

  1. What is one takeaway from the sermon and one question that you had after hearing the sermon?
  2. What would it look like to “trust yourself” rather than trusting God in your life?
  3. Our sermon gave four lessons from this text. What are they? Which is the most important for you to apply to your life this week?
  4. Read 1 Samuel 27:1; Psalm 42; Psalm 103. What are some common “sermons” you preach to yourself? How can you remind yourself of the gospel each day?
  5. What are some of the consequences of David’s unbelief? What are some ways that unbelief has had consequences in your life?
  6. Read 1 Samuel 30:6-8. What does David do when he is at his lowest moment? How does God respond? What does this teach us about God’s character?

Transformation Stories

  1. Take some time as a group to share stories of how you have seen God at work in your life or the lives of others. Alternatively, take turns sharing your testimony with your group to celebrate God’s saving and transformative work in your life.
