Remaining Faithful in Uncertainty

October 30, 2022 Speaker: Jordan Gowing Series: 1 Samuel | Looking for the True King

Topic: Sunday Morning Teaching Passage: 1 Samuel 26:1–25

When the uncertainty of life seems overwhelming, how can we remain faithful? Join us this Sunday at CrossWinds Church in Spencer as we consider the answer from 1 Samuel 26.

Sermon Discussion

  1. What do you think of the proverb, “God helps those who help themselves?” How does this text present a different picture of God?
  2. What is one takeaway from the sermon and one question that you had after hearing the sermon?
  3. Read 1 Samuel 26:8. How does Abishai interpret events? What are some ways that we are tempted to interpret “opportunity” as God’s will like Abishai? In contrast, what is the will of God for his people (cf. 1 Thessalonians 4:3)?
  4. Read 1 Samuel 26:10–11. Even though David doesn’t know how God will keep his promises, he is confident that God will do so. How does this give you confidence in the uncertainty of life?
  5. Read 1 Samuel 26:12. David is not given insight into how God is at work behind the scenes, but we are. How does this give you confidence in your own life when it seems God is silent?
  6. Read 1 Samuel 26:22–24; Hebrews 10:35–36. What is the “reward” David refers to for his righteousness? In what ways is endurance such a crucial part of the Christian life? How does David’s example in 1 Samuel 26 encourage you to endurance when you are tempted to despair?

Transformation Stories

  1. Take some time as a group to share stories of how you have seen God at work in your life or the lives of others. Alternatively, take turns sharing your testimony with your group to celebrate God’s saving and transformative work in your life.
