Waiting

October 16, 2022 Speaker: Jordan Gowing Series: 1 Samuel | Looking for the True King

Topic: Sunday Morning Teaching Passage: 1 Samuel 24:1–22

When life isn't going the way you expect, how will you wait? Join us this Sunday at CrossWinds Church in Spencer as we consider the answer from 1 Samuel 24.

Sermon Discussion

  1. What is one takeaway from the sermon and one question that you had after hearing the sermon?
  2. Read 1 Samuel 24:4. What is wrong with the conclusion of David’s men here? What are some ways that we mis-interpret opportunity as God’s will?
  3. Read 1 Samuel 24:5–6. What is the significance of Saul’s robe? Why is David struck with a guilty conscience by his actions?
  4. When we are faced with waiting, we can be tempted toward vengeance, compromise, or complaining. Which of these is hardest for you? How does David’s example challenge you toward faithfulness in your waiting?
  5. Read 1 Samuel 14:12, 15; 1 Peter 4:19; cf. Psalm 37. What does David do when faced with injustice? What injustices have you faced? How does David teach you to honor God in your waiting?
  6. Read Matthew 4:8–10; Mark 14:32–42. How does David in the cave point us to Jesus in the wilderness? In the Garden?
  7. How does Jesus’s faithfulness in the wilderness, the garden, and the cross strengthen you as you wait?

Transformation Stories

  1. Take some time as a group to share stories of how you have seen God at work in your life or the lives of others. Alternatively, take turns sharing your testimony with your group to celebrate God’s saving and transformative work in your life.
