"The Upholder of My Life"

October 9, 2022 Speaker: Jordan Gowing Series: 1 Samuel | Looking for the True King

Topic: Sunday Morning Teaching Passage: 1 Samuel 23:1–29

When we are faced with trials and affliction, how does God comfort us? Join us this Sunday at CrossWinds Church in Spencer as we consider the answer from 1 Samuel 23.

Sermon Discussion

  1. What is one takeaway from the sermon and one question that you had after hearing the sermon?
  2. Read 1 Samuel 19:6–14. In what ways does David rely on God’s word in the midst of trials? How does God use his word in a similar way today?
  3. Read Hebrews 7:22–25. In what ways does Abiathar point us to Jesus? In what ways is Jesus superior to Abiathar when we bring our requests to God?
  4. Read 1 Samuel 23:15–17. How does Jonathan encourage David? What would it look like for you to act the part of Jonathan in the church today?
  5. Read 1 Samuel 23:19–29. How does God deliver David through his providence? What does this teach you about God’s providence in your trials?
  6. How can you point others to the trustworthiness of God this week?

Vision Discussion

  1. Read Hebrews 10:19–25. Life groups are an opportunity to “strengthen” one another “in God,” just as Jonathan does. Take some time to consider how your life group can focus increasingly on encouraging one another with the gospel.

Transformation Stories

  1. Take some time as a group to share stories of how you have seen God at work in your life or the lives of others. Alternatively, take turns sharing your testimony with your group to celebrate God’s saving and transformative work in your life.
