A Covenant Changes Everything

September 18, 2022 Speaker: Jordan Gowing Series: 1 Samuel | Looking for the True King

Topic: Sunday Morning Teaching Passage: 1 Samuel 20:1–42

When life is uncertain where can we turn? Join us this Sunday at CrossWinds Church in Spencer as we consider the answer from 1 Samuel 20.

Sermon Discussion

  1. What is one highlight from the sermon and one question that you had after hearing the sermon?
  2. After considering David and Jonathan in 1 Samuel 20, how would you describe a covenant? How are their actions and commitment to one another helpful in thinking of the new covenant?
  3. Read 1 Samuel 18:3–4; 20:8, 14–16, 42. In what ways does the covenant of 1 Samuel 18 enable Jonathan and David to ask big things of one another? In what ways does the new covenant enable you to ask big things of God?
  4. Read 1 Samuel 20:30–31. What tactics does Saul use in attempting to get Jonathan to break his covenant with David? How do we experience similar temptations in breaking the new covenant with Jesus?

Vision Discussion

  1. In what ways is Jonathan a model for us of giving up our wants and desires for the sake of what God is doing in the world? How can we leave behind our own “kingdoms” to join Jesus in his kingdom?

Transformation Stories

  1. Take some time as a group to share stories of how you have seen God at work in your life or the lives of others. Alternatively, take turns sharing your testimony with your group to celebrate God’s saving and transformative work in your life.
