David, Goliath, and the Glory of God

August 28, 2022 Speaker: Jordan Gowing Series: 1 Samuel | Looking for the True King

Topic: Sunday Morning Teaching Passage: 1 Samuel 17:1–58

The account of David and Goliath is seen as the quintessential "underdog story." But is this passage really about being courageous in the face of impossible odds? (Spoiler: it's not!) Join us this Sunday at CrossWinds Church in Spencer as we consider what we can learn about the glory of God from 1 Samuel 17.

Sermon Discussion

  1. How is this story of David and Goliath typically portrayed? What are some problems with this portrayal?
  2. What is one highlight from the sermon and one question that you had after hearing the sermon?
  3. Read 1 Samuel 17:10–11. In what ways are Goliath’s words an insult to God himself? Why is Israel’s response significant?
  4. Read 1 Samuel 17:26. For the first time, someone considers Goliath’s words from God’s perspective. How should all of life be lived in light of God’s perspective? How does this change things?
  5. Of the three different comparisons between David and Saul, which one stands out to you the most? Which one do you most need to hear? How can you follow David (and Jesus) in this area this week?
