Sermon Discussion Questions

  1. It has been a few weeks since we have been in 1 Samuel. What is one thing that you have learned from this book so far?
  2. What is one highlight from the sermon and one question that you had after hearing the sermon?
  3. 1 Samuel 8 describes a time when Israel intended something for evil, but God intended it for good. What is the good God intends? What are some other examples from the Bible? Are there times in your life where good came from the bad others meant to do to you?
  4. Read Genesis 1:26–28. In our sermon, Pastor Jordan argues that “kingship” has been a part of God’s plan since the very beginning. What did kingship look like in the Garden of Eden before sin?
  5. Read Deuteronomy 17:14–20. God gives a number of expectations for the eventual king of Israel. Briefly describe the “why” behind these commands. Which is most impactful to you?
  6. Read 1 Samuel 8:7–8. What is at the heart of Israel’s desire for a king?
  7. God gives Israel exactly what they want (a king like the nations) not as a sign of blessing but to allow them to experience the frustration of life outside of God’s plan. How does God do the same today?
  8. Christ Connection: How does this passage point us to Jesus?
  9. This Time Tomorrow: Are you rejecting the king of glory? What would it look like to gladly follow King Jesus with your time, thoughts, actions this week?
