  1. Imagine being one of the disciples “left behind” on Jesus’s trip up the mountain for the Transfiguration. How would you feel? What actions would you take in response?
  2. What is one highlight from the sermon and one question that you had after hearing the sermon?
  3. Read Mark 9:14–18; 6:7–13. What is the difference between these two moments? Why are the disciples able to cast out demons in Mark 6 but not in Mark 9?
  4. Two dangers facing us today are to see spiritually evil forces (demons) at work in everything or in nothing. How can we find the right balance?
  5. Read Mark 9:16–18, 21–22. Imagine being the father of this boy. How would you react to the disciples’ failure? How might that color your picture of Jesus himself?
  6. Read Mark 9:19; Romans 2:4. What is the significance of Jesus’s words, “bear with” in Mark 9? What is the end goal of God’s patience toward us?
  7. Read Mark 9:23–24. What are some areas in your life where you might need to cry out, “Lord I believe; help my unbelief”?
  8. Have you ever considered that unbelief is something that we should repent over? How do we balance this charge to repent with the lingering unbelief that often lives within us?
  9. Read Mark 9:28–29. What does Jesus mean when he says, “This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer”?
  10. How does prayer an act of declaring our dependence upon Jesus?
  11. What are some ways that you can declare and remind yourself of your dependence upon Jesus this week?
