  1. What comes to mind when you think of “discipleship”? Is “discipleship” an optional part of the Christian life? What does “discipleship” look like?
  2. What is one thing highlight from the sermon and one question that you had after hearing the sermon?
  3. Read Mark 1:14–20; 2 Corinthians 5:15; 1 Peter 4:2. What do these verses teach us about how to give Jesus first place in our life?
  4. Read Luke 14:28–32; 2 Timothy 3:12; John 12:25. What can we learn about the cost of discipleship from these verses? Why are we told to “count the cost” of following him before becoming a Christian?
  5. Read Philippians 3:7–8; Matthew 13:44–46. Is following Jesus whole-heartedly worth the high sacrifice Jesus demands? If you are able, give an example from your life when following Jesus demanded a high sacrifice? Do you consider it worth it?
  6. What is the significance of Jesus’s declaration that the “time has come”?
  7. Read Jeremiah 16:16–18. What is God saying when he talks about “fishers of men” in this passage? How does this change your perspective on Jesus’s words here?
  8. What is repentance? Why is repentance so rarely talked about in the church today?
  9. What would it mean for you to live a life of costly faith, costly repentance, and costly obedience this week?
