God's Will For Your Life

April 14, 2024 Speaker: Jordan Gowing Series: 1 Thessalonians | A Future for Now

Topic: Sunday Morning Teaching Passage: 1 Thessalonians 4:1–8

What is God's will for my life? Join us this Sunday at CrossWinds Church in Spencer as we consider the answer from 1 Thessalonians 4.

Sermon Discussion

  1. What does it look like to please God? How does this mindset transform the way that we live today? How does this change the way that we view “God’s will for our lives”?
  2. What is one takeaway from the sermon and one question that you had after hearing the sermon?
  3. Read 1 Thessalonians 4:1–2. Here Paul argues that many times pleasing God isn’t about learning more but applying what we already know. How have you seen this to be true in your life?
  4. Read 1 Thessalonians 4:3–6. Paul lists three areas of “holiness.” What are they? What does he have in view narrowly? What is in view more broadly?
  5. Read 1 Thessalonians 4:4–5. Why is self-control so important in living a life that please God? Why is it so hard?
  6. Discuss the following quote from Tim Keller’s book Counterfeit Gods (p. 169): “Look at your most uncontrollable emotions. Just as a fisherman looking for fish knows to go where the water is roiling, look for your idols at the bottom of your most painful emotions […]. If you are angry, ask, ‘Is there something here too important to me, something I must have at all costs?’”
  1. Read 1 Thessalonians 4:6. In our sermon, Pastor Jordan suggests that the phrase “wrong his brother in this matter” specifically addresses “taking something that doesn’t belong to you.” What makes contentment so hard in today’s culture? How can we fight for contentment?
  2. This Time Tomorrow: How does this passage transform your thoughts, actions, or interactions at this time tomorrow?
