The Final Chapter of King David's Reign

January 7, 2024 Speaker: Jordan Gowing Series: 2 Samuel | A Better King

Topic: Sunday Morning Teaching Passage: 2 Samuel 20:1–26

What does 2 Samuel 20 teach us about David's legacy and our great hope? Join us this Sunday at CrossWinds Church in Spencer as we consider the answer.

Sermon Discussion

  1. We began our sermon by talking about "legacy." Last week as a part of our annual “Take Up and Read” sermon, we were encouraged to read the Bible this year. What is your plan for reading the Bible in 2024? How can that be a part of your legacy?
  2. What is one takeaway from the sermon and one question that you had after hearing the sermon?
  3. How does 2 Samuel point us to Jesus? What does the phrase “A Better King” mean?
  4. Pastor Jordan pointed out that this is the final chapter of 2 Samuel before an “epilogue.” How does this “finality” help us evaluate David’s legacy as king? Read 2 Samuel 20:1–3. What do these verses tell us about David’s legacy?
  5. Read 2 Samuel 20:4–13. What do we make of Joab? How is the way of Joab different than the way of Jesus (John 18:36)? What are some ways that we are tempted to be like Joab (using the world’s means to accomplish God’s will) today?
  6. Read 2 Samuel 8:15–18; 20:23–26. In light of the parallel passage in 2 Samuel 8, what is 2 Samuel 20 telling us at the conclusion of David’s reign (cf. 1 Samuel 8:11–16)?
  7. While 2 Samuel 20 ends with disappointment, it also leads us to hope and expectation. How does the failure of David point us toward our hope in King Jesus?
  8. How will the hope found in King Jesus and his kingdom shape your life this coming week?
