March 19, 2023 Speaker: Jordan Gowing Series: 2 Samuel | A Better King

Topic: Sunday Morning Teaching Passage: 2 Samuel 3:2–39

What happens when we take our eyes off the Lord? Join us this Sunday as we consider the answer from David's life in 2 Samuel 3.

Sermon Discussion

  1. Throughout 1–2 Samuel, we see that when David takes his eyes off the Lord, he falls into disobedience and unbelief. What are some ways that you have seen that true in your life?
  2. What is one takeaway from the sermon and one question that you had after hearing the sermon?
  3. Read 2 Samuel 3:2–5; 5:13–15; 1 Chronicles 3:1–9; esp. Deuteronomy 17:17. David’s actions may have been culturally acceptable, but what did God think of them? What are some culturally acceptable ways we also—to use the language of Deuteronomy 17—allow our hearts to be “turned away”?
  4. Read 2 Samuel 3:6–13. In one sentence, how would you describe Abner here? Do the same with David in 2 Samuel 3:13–16 and Joab in 2 Samuel 3:26–27.
  5. Read 2 Samuel 3:26–27; Joshua 20:1–7. What makes Joab’s actions so wicked? What should have been David’s response?
  6. Read 2 Samuel 3:38–39; Titus 3:4–7. After a chapter of “unbelief,” why is David’s confession and repentance so important? How do David’s failures point us to Jesus?
  7. Read Micah 7:8–9. Does David’s sin disqualify him from being used in God’s kingdom and plan? After he repents, does David’s sin disqualify him from God’s delight in him? How does this give us assurance when we fail as well?
  8. What is one way that this text can transform your life this week?
