The Golden Calf
Use the following thoughts and questions to have a spiritual conversation as a family. Don’t
emphasize having the right answer, but focus on spending time discussing the Word as a family.
SCRIPTURE
Exodus 32:1-14; 34:1, 4-9.
SESSION SUMMARY
In this week’s session, we studied how the Israelites made a golden calf as an idol to worship while Moses was on the mountain receiving God’s law. They failed to worship God the right way and deserved God’s judgment. Through Moses’ intercession, God was merciful. When Moses went back up the mountain, God reminded Moses of His character. Here are some of the main things we saw in the story:
• Israel turns to idols (Ex. 32:1-6).
• Moses asks God to be merciful (Ex. 32:7-14). • God is gracious and just (Ex. 34:1, 4-9).
CONVERSATION QUESTIONS
• What are some things that can become idols in our lives?
• How often do we pray for others to experience God’s mercy?
• Why is it important to know that God is both gracious and just?
FAMILY CHALLENGE
Challenge each person to give up something this week that may be becoming an idol. It may even be a good thing that has simply gotten too much attention or is taking higher priority than it should. Discuss at the end of the week how difficult it was and what the exercise taught you.
