Failure in the Wilderness
Use the following thoughts and questions to have a spiritual conversation as a family. Don’t
emphasize having the right answer, but focus on spending time discussing the Word as a family.
SCRIPTURE
Exodus 16:2-5, 13-20, 27-30; 17:3-7.
SESSION SUMMARY
In this week’s session, we looked at the story of how God provided manna from heaven and water from the rock in Exodus 16-17. The Israelites needed food and water, and God personally provided for them during their wilderness experience. Here are some of the main things we learned from the story:
• God wanted His people to trust His provision (Ex. 16:2-5).
• Some Israelites did not trust God’s provision (Ex. 16:13-20, 27-30). • God’s presence was displayed through His provision (Ex. 17:3-7).
CONVERSATION QUESTIONS
• What might it look like for us to trust God to provide?
• How has God provided for our family?
• What are some things in our life that are a reminder of God’s presence and provision?
FAMILY CHALLENGE
In the story, God told the Israelites to only gather manna six days of the week and to rest on the seventh day. On the sixth day, God instructed them to gather a double portion of manna that would last two days. Resting was a way to show their trust in God. Our lives are very busy and probably overscheduled. Discuss as a family how you can create margin for rest in your schedule, and how that may be a blessing to your family and demonstrate your trust in God.
