There is Another King, Jesus

Speaker: Jordan Gowing Series: Acts Topic: Sunday Morning Teaching Passage: Acts 17:1–15

The message of the gospel is necessarily political, because it proclaims a new King: Jesus. What does this mean and what might it look for the people of God today? Join us this Sunday at CrossWinds Church in Spencer as we consider the answer from Acts 17.

Sermon Discussion

  1. Read Acts 17:7. In what way is baptism an act declaring, “There is another king, Jesus”? How do the terms “allegiance” and “citizenship” shape your view of baptism?
  2. What is one takeaway you have from this passage? What will you do with that this week? What is a question you still have after studying this passage?
  3. Read Acts 17:1–9. How does the message of Jesus challenge the politics of the Roman Empire? What do we mean when we say that the gospel is “political”?
  4. Read Acts 17:1–4; Luke 24:45–47. How would you describe Paul’s method of evangelism in these verses? How are they similar to Jesus’s method in Luke 24?
  5. In our sermon, Pastor Jordan mentioned that Paul’s method in Thessalonica (and Berea) is different than his method in Athens (17:16–34) because of the different contexts. How does Acts 17:1–15 guide us in sharing the gospel with people who believe in the Bible’s authority? How does Acts 17:16–34 guide us in sharing the gospel with people who do not believe in the Bible’s authority?
  6. Read Acts 17:10–12. Why are the Bereans “more noble” than the Thessalonians? What would it look like for you to follow this example today?
  7. How does allegiance to a new King, Jesus, change everything?
  8. This Time Tomorrow: How does this passage transform your thoughts, actions, or interactions at “this time tomorrow”?
