The Lord's Supper
Speaker: Jordan Gowing Series: Stand Alone Topic: Sunday Morning Teaching Passage: 1 Corinthians 11:17–34
What is the Lord's Supper? Why is it so important? Join us this Sunday at CrossWinds Church in Spencer as we consider the answer from 1 Corinthians 11.
Sermon Discussion
- What are your experiences with the Lord’s Supper? If you came from a different church background, what is it? How does it differ from what we talked about today?
- What is one takeaway you have from this passage? What will you do with that this week? What is a question you still have after studying this passage?
- Read 1 Corinthians 10:16–17. What is the purpose behind the Lord’s Supper?
- Read 1 Corinthians 11:20–22. In your own words, how would you summarize the problem in Corinth? What are some ways that the same sort of problems can be present in the church today?
- Read 1 Corinthians 11:23–26. Theologian Michael Green suggests six “movements” that take place in the Lord’s Supper: (1) look back (to Christ’s death), (2) look in (in self-examination), (3) look up (fellowship with God), (4) look around (fellowship with each other), (5) look forward (to Christ’s return), and (6) look outward (to proclaim God’s word to others). Discuss how these are on display in this passage. How does this change your view of communion?
- In our sermon we looked at three different views of the Lord’s Supper. What are some of the differences? Read John 6:53–57. What are some of the ways that the Lord’s Supper nourishes us?
- Read 1 Corinthians 11:27–28. What does it mean to eat and drink in an unworthy manner? What does it not mean? Who should participate in communion? Who should abstain?
- This Time Tomorrow: How does this passage transform your thoughts, actions, or interactions at “this time tomorrow”?
