The Death of Stephen

Speaker: Jordan Gowing Series: Acts Topic: Sunday Morning Teaching Passage: Acts 7:54–60, Acts 8:1–4

What comfort and hope do we have in the face of death? Join us this Sunday at CrossWinds Church in Spencer as we consider what God is doing in the death of Stephen.

Sermon Discussion

  1. Our culture is relatively unique compared to every other culture in world history because it doesn’t like to think about death. As Christians, why is it important to have open and honest conversations about death?
  2. What is one takeaway you have from this passage? What is a question you still have after studying this passage?
  3. Read Acts 7:55. In our sermon, we saw that “to be filled with the Spirit” is to be “equipped by God for a specific task.” What is the “specific task” God is equipping Stephen for here? How does this matter for today?
  4. Read Hebrews 2:14–18. Here in Hebrews we are told that we no longer need to fear death because Jesus faced the same fear but was victorious for our sake. How do these verses provide comfort and confidence?
  5. Read Acts 7:55–56. What is the significance of Jesus standing (rather than sitting) in Stephen’s heavenly vision here? How does that give you hope and comfort in the face of death?
  6. Read Acts 7:58; 8:1, 3; 9:1; 22:4; 26:10. What happens to the person of Saul here? What does Saul’s eventual conversion teach us about the power of God for salvation? How does that give us hope for others?
  7. Read Acts 1:8; 8:1, 4. How does God use suffering and persecution to accomplish his purposes? What does this mean for us today?
  8. This Time Tomorrow: How does this passage transform your thoughts, actions, or interactions at “this time tomorrow”?
  9. Prayer Emphasis: In addition to praying for the prayer requests of your group, take some time to pray for ValleyLight Church, the EFCA church plant in Sioux Rapids.
