The First Christian Sermon

Speaker: Jordan Gowing Series: Acts Topic: Sunday Morning Teaching Passage: Acts 2:14–41

What is the gospel, according to the book of Acts? Join us this Sunday at CrossWinds Church in Spencer as we consider the first Christian sermon in Acts 2.

Sermon Discussion

  1. Take a few moments to discuss baptism. What is it? Why is it important? Have you been baptized as a believer? Why or why not?
  2. What is one takeaway from this passage and one question that you had after studying this passage?
  3. Read Acts 2:21. Peter begins his sermon by quoting from Joel 2. Based off Acts 2:21, what is the significance of the coming of the Spirit?
  4. Read Acts 2:23. This verse affirms both (1) God’s sovereignty and (2) human responsibility. Why is it essential to affirm both? How does God use the wickedness of the human heart to accomplish his good plans? (cf. Genesis 50:20)
  5. Read Acts 2:25–28. How does Peter interpret David’s words in Psalm 16 to prove that Jesus is the “newer and better David”?
  6. Read Acts 2:33–35. Why is it important that Peter preaches about Jesus’s exaltation and not just his resurrection?
  7. Read Acts 2:38–39; cf. Romans 4:20–21. Based off these verses, how does someone become a Christian?
  8. Read Romans 6:3–9. What does this passage teach us about baptism?
  9. This Time Tomorrow: How does this passage transform your thoughts, actions, or interactions at “this time tomorrow”?
