Sermon Discussion
- Have you ever studied the book of Joel before? What did you know of this book before our study?
- What is one takeaway from the sermon and one question that you had after hearing the sermon?
- Read 1 Peter 1:10. After our study, how would you say that Joel fulfills Peter’s words?
- Read Joel 1:4, 7, 10, 12, 17–20. How do these verses describe the destruction that Judah has experienced?
- Read Deuteronomy 28:38–40, 45–48. What do these verses reveal about the cause behind the locust plague?
- Read Joel 2:12–17. Why does God tell his people about the coming judgment? What stands out to you about these verses concerning God’s mercy? (cf. Exodus 34:6)
- In light of Joel 2:12–17, what does true repentance and faith look like? What does it not look like?
- Read Joel 2:14; Jonah 3:6–10. How does the context of Jonah help us interpret the “who knows?” of Joel 2?
- Read Joel 2:18–19, 21–27. How does God respond to his people’s return in repentance? How do these verses give us comfort when we are faced with our own sin?
- Read Joel 2:28–29; Acts 2:14, 16–17. How does God’s future blessing for those who repent and turn to him in faith overshadow God’s blessing in Joel’s day?
