2 Thessalonians | The Man of Lawlessness, Part Two

Speaker: Jordan Gowing Series: 2 Thessalonians | The Lord is Faithful Topic: Sunday Morning Teaching Passage: 2 Thessalonians 2:6–12

When is Jesus coming back? What will happen before his return? Can we know the answers to these questions? How should we respond when someone claims to know that Jesus is coming on an exact date? How do we live faithfully in the midst of all these things? Join us this Sunday at CrossWinds Church in Spencer as we consider the answer from 2 Thessalonians 2.

Sermon Discussion

  1. After studying 2 Thessalonians 2 the past two weeks, how would you respond to someone who says that the end is here?
  2. What is one takeaway from the sermon and one question that you had after hearing the sermon?
  3. Read 2 Thessalonians 2:6–7. There is much debate concerning the “one who restrains” in these verses. Regardless the answer, what do these verses tell us about God’s sovereign control?
  4. Pastor Jordan said, “The end won’t come until the exact moment God decides.” How does this give us comfort in the midst of the uncertainty of the world we live in?
  5. Read 2 Thessalonians 2:7; cf. 1 John 2:18. What is the significance of these verses for attempting to identify the timing of the end?
  6. Read 2 Thessalonians 2:8. How does this verse give us confidence in the victory of Jesus? Do these words give us hope for today?
  7. Read 2 Thessalonians 2:9–12. These verses give us multiple reasons why people reject the gospel and are causing suffering for the church. What are they?
  8. Read Exodus 9:34; 14:4, 17; Hebrews 3:7–15. What do these verses tell us about our work and God’s work in “hardening” hearts to respond to the gospel?
  9. Read 2 Thessalonians 2:13–15. What does it look like to stand firm today, whether we are living in the end or not?
  10. This Time Tomorrow: How does this passage transform your thoughts, actions, or interactions at “this time tomorrow”?
