  1. If someone were to ask you, “How can I please God?,” what would you say in response? Has your answer changed after studying 1 Thessalonians 4:9–12?
  2. What is one takeaway from the sermon and one question that you had after hearing the sermon?
  3. Why are relationships so essential to the Christian life? As you reflect on your own walk with Jesus, how important would you say relationships are to you?
  4. Read 1 Thessalonians 4:9–10; Mark 10:29–30. What does “brotherly love” look like? How does the language of the church as family “set the standard”?
  5. Read 1 Thessalonians 4:10–11. Paul lists four areas of a lifestyle that is pleasing to God. What are they? Which stands out to you?
  6. What does Paul have in view when he urges the church toward a “quiet life”? How does this differ with our culture (cf. Gen. 11:4).
  7. Read Genesis 2:15. What is the Bible’s view of work? How does this differ from the two dangers of our culture today? 
  8. Read 1 Thessalonians 4:12. Paul lists two reasons why we should pursue a life pleasing to God. What are they? How is a life that is pleasing to God also a life of love toward others?
