  3. Read Proverbs 10:19; 12:18, 25; 15:1, 28; 16:21, 23; 18:21. Proverbs is filled with passages on the importance of speech. What do these verses tell us about God’s concern for our words?
  4. Read Ephesians 4:29; Colossians 3:16–17. What are some ways that our speech can be used for good?
  5. Read James 3:3–5. The tongue has disproportionate power compared to its size. Share a time when words devastated you. Share a time when words provided encouragement.
  6. Read James 3:9–12. What is the danger of double speak? How does double speak destroy churches?
  7. Read Matthew 12:33–37. What does Jesus say about the connection between our words and our heart? What do your words reveal about your heart?
  8. Read Matthew 12:36. What does Jesus’s word “careless” reveal about words that “slip past our filter”? What is God’s standard?
