The King Enthroned

April 2, 2023 Speaker: Jordan Gowing Series: 2 Samuel | A Better King

Topic: Sunday Morning Teaching Passage: 2 Samuel 5:1–25

How does God's eternal plan for a king lead us to Palm Sunday? Join us this Sunday at CrossWinds Church in Spencer as we consider the answer from David's enthronement in 2 Samuel 5.

Sermon Discussion

  1. Read Romans 5:3–5. God makes David wait for about 20 years from the time he is anointed king (1 Samuel 16) to when he becomes king (2 Samuel 5). Why does God make his people wait? How do you handle seasons of waiting?
  2. What is one takeaway from the sermon and one question that you had after hearing the sermon?
  3. Read Ezekiel 34:2–16. How would you describe God’s purposes for a king? What do we learn about God’s love for his people from this passage? How does it point us to King Jesus?
  4. Read Genesis 15:18–21; Joshua 15:63; Judges 1:21; Judges 2:1–3. Why was the presence of the Jebusites in Israel such a problem? What does it teach us about David’s priorities that this is one of the first things he does after becoming king? What would it look like for you to have similar priorities?
  5. Read 2 Samuel 5:12; Philippians 2:5–8; 2 Corinthians 5:21; 8:9. How does David’s understanding of his role as king over God’s people point us to Jesus?
  6. Read Mark 11:11. Why is this verse so shocking? What are some ways we are tempted toward indifference? What does indifference toward King Jesus look like today?
  7. Considering 2 Samuel 5 and Palm Sunday, what would it look like for you to live in light of the reign of Jesus this week?
