What Kind of King?

March 5, 2023 Speaker: Jordan Gowing Series: 2 Samuel | A Better King

Topic: Sunday Morning Teaching Passage: 2 Samuel 1:1–27

Whether we recognize it or not, each of us is ruled by a king. But what kind of king does God want over his people? Join us this Sunday at CrossWinds Church in Spencer as we consider the answer from 2 Samuel 1.

Sermon Discussion

  1. What comes to mind when you think of kings and kingdoms?
  2. What is one takeaway from the sermon and one question that you had after hearing the sermon?
  3. Read 1 Samuel 8:19–20; 12:9–12. What are the reasons Israel asks for a king? How is this request a rejection of God’s kingship?
  4. Read Deuteronomy 17:14–20. What stands out to you from these verses about God’s plan for a king? How are they different than Israel’s request in 1 Samuel 8?
  5. Read 1 Samuel 4:10–18; 2 Samuel 1:1–4. What are the similarities between these two passages? How do the similarities reveal Israel’s spiritual state in 2 Samuel 1?
  6. Read 2 Samuel 1:11–16. John 11:32–37; Matthew 12:17–21. How does David point us to Jesus in 2 Samuel 1? How does this lead us to hope and worship?
  7. What would it look like for Jesus to be king in your life this week?

Transformation Stories

  1. Take some time as a group to share stories of how you have seen God at work in your life or the lives of others. Alternatively, take turns sharing your testimony with your group to celebrate God’s saving and transformative work in your life.
