Two Kingdoms, Two Spirits

June 12, 2022 Speaker: Jordan Gowing Series: 1 Samuel | Looking for the True King

Topic: Sunday Morning Teaching Passage: 1 Samuel 16:13–23

How is God at work behind-the-scenes in every day life? Join us this Sunday at CrossWinds Church in Spencer as we consider the answer from 1 Samuel 16.

Sermon Discussion

  1. What is one thing that you are looking forward to this summer?
  2. What is one highlight from the sermon and one question that you had after hearing the sermon?
  3. Read 1 Samuel 16:13–14. Consider what we have seen from Saul in 1 Samuel (esp. 15:26). Why does God send a spirit to “torment” him? How should Saul have responded to this form of judgment?
  4. Read 2 Chronicles 36:15–21. How does God act in a similar way (using evil to accomplish his good purposes) in the exile? What are some other examples of God using evil for his good purposes?
  5. Read 1 Samuel 15:28; 16:13, 19. Unbeknownst to Saul, he invites the future king into his court. What are some ways that God works behind the scenes to accomplish his purposes?
  6. What are some possible reasons God makes David wait several years before he receives what he has been promised? What are some possible reasons God makes us wait for his promises as well?
  7. How can you apply this passage to your life this week?

Vision Discussion

  1. Summer is a great time to get to know your neighbors. What are some ways that you can love your actual neighbors this summer?

Transformation Stories

  1. Take some time as a group to share stories of how you have seen God at work in your life or the lives of others. Alternatively, take turns sharing your testimony with your group to celebrate God’s saving and transformative work in your life.
