The Tragedy of King Saul

May 22, 2022 Speaker: Jordan Gowing Series: 1 Samuel | Looking for the True King

Topic: Sunday Morning Teaching Passage: 1 Samuel 14:23–52

What makes a life a tragedy? Join us this Sunday at CrossWinds Church in Spencer as we consider the answer from the life of Saul in 1 Samuel 14.

Sermon Discussion

  1. How will you be remembered by those around you? How would you like to be remembered?
  2. What is one highlight from the sermon and one question that you had after hearing the sermon?
  3. Read 1 Samuel 14:24. In what ways are Saul’s actions rooted in his wounded pride? What are some ways that you instinctively react when your pride is wounded?
  4. Read Joshua 7:10–26; 1 Samuel 14:29, 36–46. What are the similarities between these passages? In what ways does Saul try to act like Joshua? Who is he really like? What are some ways that we try to give the appearance of spiritual maturity without substance?
  5. Read 1 Samuel 14:47–48. What do these verses tell us about Saul? How does that compare to God’s assessment of him in 1 Samuel 13–15? Is your life like Saul’s, a worldly success but a spiritual failure?

Vision Discussion

  1. Read 1 Timothy 2:2. As we think of legacy and being remembered, consider: what are some ways that you are discipling and raising up the next generation? Are you involved in raising up new leaders or investing in the kids of CrossWinds?

Transformation Stories

  1. Take some time as a group to share stories of how you have seen God at work in your life or the lives of others. Alternatively, take turns sharing your testimony with your group to celebrate God’s saving and transformative work in your life.
