Saul and His Heir

May 15, 2022 Speaker: Jordan Gowing Series: 1 Samuel | Looking for the True King

Topic: Sunday Morning Teaching Passage: 1 Samuel 14:1–23

What might God do through radical obedience rooted in a radical confidence in God? Join us this Sunday at CrossWinds Church in Spencer as we consider the answer from 1 Samuel 14.

Sermon Discussion

  1. Consider the example of Jonathan in this passage; without using any other passages of the Bible, how would you describe faith? (cf. 1 Samuel 14:6)
  2. What is one highlight from the sermon and one question that you had after hearing the sermon?
  3. Read 1 Samuel 14:6–12. How does Jonathan’s faith lead him to action? In what ways does your faith lead you into action? What are some of the “uncomfortable” things God is calling you to do in faith?
  4. Read 1 Samuel 14:16–19; 1 Samuel 4:3–4. What picture of Saul do we get from these verses? Why does Saul stop seeking God’s will? What does this reveal to us about his priorities?
  5. Read 1 Samuel 14:6, 23. How does God use the faith of Jonathan to accomplish his purposes for his glory?
  6. What would it look like for you to follow the example of Jonathan this week? How might God use your faith-fueled action for his glory?

Vision Discussion

  1. Read 1 Peter 4:7–11. Jonathan is an excellent example of one of our vision points, “We ask big things of people because we expect big things from God.” What are some of the “big things” God might be asking of you to live out his mission at CrossWinds and in our community?

Transformation Stories

  1. Take some time as a group to share stories of how you have seen God at work in your life or the lives of others. Alternatively, take turns sharing your testimony with your group to celebrate God’s saving and transformative work in your life.
