The Foundation of Grace

May 1, 2022 Speaker: Jordan Gowing Series: 1 Samuel | Looking for the True King

Topic: Sunday Morning Teaching Passage: 1 Samuel 12:1–25

Is grace too good to be true? Join us this Sunday at CrossWinds Church in Spencer as we consider the answer from 1 Samuel 12.

Sermon Discussion

  1. What is one highlight from the sermon and one question that you had after hearing the sermon?
  2. Read 1 Samuel 12:6–12.  In light of God’s track record (6–11), what makes Israel’s request (12) so egregious? Like Israel, what are some reasons that we have to trust God? What are some ways that reject him through a lack of dependence upon him?
  3. Read 1 Samuel 12:14–18. In verses 6–12, Samuel confronts Israel’s sin but they don’t seem to listen. How does God use the conviction of sin and the warning of judgment to lead to repentance in his people?
  4. Read 1 Samuel 12:22; Deuteronomy 7:6–8; 2 Timothy 2:13. What is the source of God’s steadfast love toward us?
  5. Read 1 Samuel 12:23. What might it look like for you to use your stage of life to contribute to the mission and people of God?
  6. Read 1 Samuel 12:24–25. What might it look like for you to “serve the LORD faithfully” this coming week? How can you remind yourself of the “great things” he has done for you?

Vision Discussion

  1. Read Jeremiah 28:7. Why is it important for us to be committed to the good of our community? What are some ways that we (as a church and as individuals) can seek the good of our community?

Transformation Stories

  1. Take some time as a group to share stories of how you have seen God at work in your life or the lives of others. Alternatively, take turns sharing your testimony with your group to celebrate God’s saving and transformative work in your life.
