God Proves His Glory
March 6, 2022 Speaker: Jordan Gowing Series: 1 Samuel | Looking for the True King
Topic: Sunday Morning Teaching Passage: 1 Samuel 5:1–12, 1 Samuel 6:1–21, 1 Samuel 7:1–2
When we diminish the glory of God with our lives, how does God respond? Join us this Sunday at CrossWinds Church in Spencer as we consider the answer from 1 Samuel.
Sermon Discussion Questions
- How would you define the glory of God? Why is God’s commitment to his glory both good news and terrifying news for us?
- What is one highlight from the sermon and one question that you had after hearing the sermon?
- Read 1 Samuel 5:1–5; Colossians 3:5; Matthew 6:19–24. How does 1 Samuel portray idolatry? What are some ways that you are held captive by the foolishness of “modern-day” idolatry?
- Read 1 Samuel 6:6; Exodus 9:16; 10:1–2; 14:4. Why does 1 Samuel reference the exodus? According to these verses from Exodus, what is God doing in the exodus? What does this teach us about God’s view of his glory?
- 1 Samuel 5–6 give us a picture of God working in the background, clearly orchestrating events, yet the text never explicitly saying that God is at work (until 6:19). What are some ways that God is at work “in the background” today? Why is this important to remember?
- Read 1 Samuel 6:19–21. What happened at Beth-shemesh? What does this reveal to us about the hearts of the people of Israel? Did they learn anything while the ark was in Philistine territory?
- In your own words, what does it mean to “fear God”? What does this look like on a day-to-day basis?
- This Time Tomorrow: How does this passage transform your thoughts, actions, or interactions at this time tomorrow?
