God's Concern for God's Glory

February 6, 2022 Speaker: Jordan Gowing Series: 1 Samuel | Looking for the True King

Topic: Sunday Morning Teaching Passage: 1 Samuel 2:11–36

Does the somewhat abstract idea of God's glory have any impact on my day-to-day life? Yes! Join us this Sunday at CrossWinds Church in Spencer as we consider how God's concern for his glory should transform the way we live.

Sermon Discussion Questions

  1. Discuss the statement, “God is concerned with God’s glory.” Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Why or why not?
  2. What is one highlight from the sermon and one question that you had after hearing the sermon?
  3. As a group, compare the passage’s descriptions of Eli’s family and the descriptions of Elkanah’s family. How do the actions of these two families reveal their understanding of God’s glory? In what ways do our actions reflect God’s glory (for better or worse)?
  4. Read 1 Samuel 2:12. What does 1 Samuel 2 mean when it says that Eli’s sons “did not know the LORD”? In what way was this the root of their problem?
  5. Read 1 Samuel 2:12–17. In what ways are Eli’s sons “worthless” with sin that “was very great”? What warning should we take from these verses?
  6. Read 1 Samuel 2:25; Hebrews 3:12–15; Exod. 7:3, 13; 8:15, 32; 9:12, 34–35. Why does the author of Hebrews stress the importance of repentance and obedience today? What can we learn from the sons of Eli and Pharaoh?
  7. Read 1 Samuel 2:29. God pronounces judgment not only on Eli’s sons but Eli as well. What is Eli guilty of? What are some ways that we are guilty of the same today?
  8. Read 1 Samuel 2:26; Luke 2:52. God always continues to work for his glory, even in the darkest times. What are some ways that this passage points us to Jesus?
  9. This Time Tomorrow: How does this passage transform your thoughts, actions, or interactions at this time tomorrow?
