Surrender All Worldly Claims

January 23, 2022 Speaker: Jordan Gowing Series: 1 Samuel | Looking for the True King

Topic: Sunday Morning Teaching Passage: 1 Samuel 1:21–28

What would it look like to be fully surrendered to Jesus and his plan in this world? Join us this Sunday at CrossWinds Church in Spencer as we consider the actions of Hannah and Elkanah in 1 Samuel 1.

Sermon Discussion Questions

  1. What comes to mind when you think of “surrender”? In what ways is this is an important way of looking at the Christian life?
  2. What is one highlight from the sermon and one question that you had after hearing the sermon?
  3. Read 1 Samuel 1:21–22; Deuteronomy 6:4–7. Hannah recognizes the impact that a parent can have, even at a young age. Share some ways that parents (of children any age) can intentionally point their children toward the gospel.
  4. Read Exodus 19:5–6. What is a covenant? According to Exodus 19, what are the blessings of the covenant God makes with Israel? How does this passage reveal the unique relationship between God and his people?
  5. Read 1 Samuel 1:23. Elkanah’s words, “may the LORD establish his word” are a prayer that God will work according to the promises he has made in his covenant. Elkanah and Hannah center their lives around the promises of God in his word. What would it look like for you to center your life on Jesus and the promises of his word?
  6. Read 1 Samuel 1:24–25. Why does Hannah offer such an extravagant offering to God in the tabernacle? What are some ways that you can respond to the grace of God with the same devotion?
  7. Read 1 Samuel 1:28. Take a moment to imagine the difficulty facing Hannah in this moment. How might we follow her example in our own lives by prioritizing the mission of God more than our own wants?
  8. What would it look like for you to surrender all worldly claims upon your life (and if applicable, the lives of others in your family)?
  9. This Time Tomorrow: How does this passage transform your thoughts, actions, or interactions at this time tomorrow?
