Deadly Presumption

September 19, 2021 Speaker: Jordan Gowing Series: Jude | Preserve the Truth

Topic: Sunday Morning Teaching Passage: Jude 1:8–10

How should I respond when people presume to speak on God's behalf, especially when he is silent? Join us this Sunday at CrossWinds Church in Spencer as we consider the answer from Jude.

Sermon Discussion Questions

  1. Has anyone ever told you, “God told me…”? What did they say? How did you respond? After our sermon, how would you respond?
  2. What is one highlight from the sermon and one question that you had after hearing the sermon?
  3. Read Jude 8; 1 John 4:1; cf. Acts 17:10–12. What should we do when people claim to speak for God?
  4. Read Jude 9. What’s going on in this verse? How would you explain this verse to a new believer?
  5. Many people struggle with submitting to spiritual authority in the church. How does Jude 9 influence our understanding of authority and roles in the church?
  6. Read Numbers 21:14; 1 Kings 14:19, 29; 1 Chronicles 29:29; Luke 1:1; 1 Corinthians 15:33; Titus 1:12. In each of these passages, the Bible references a source not in the Bible. How does this help us if we are concerned about Jude’s reference in verse 9?
  7. Read Jude 10; Jeremiah 17:9. What contrast is Jude describing here? What is the danger facing those who listen to their heart rather than the gospel? What are some ways that the message of the gospel is not “natural” for you and it takes effort to believe it?
  8. This Time Tomorrow: How does this passage transform your thoughts, actions, or interactions at this time tomorrow?
