Called, Beloved, Kept

August 22, 2021 Speaker: Jordan Gowing Series: Jude | Preserve the Truth

Topic: Sunday Morning Teaching Passage: Jude 1:1–2

How does the gospel transform who we are? Join us this Sunday at CrossWinds Church in Spencer as we consider the answer from the book of Jude.

Sermon Discussion Questions

  1. What did you know about the book of Jude before this study? What are you most looking forward to about studying the book of Jude?
  2. What is one highlight from the sermon and one question that you had after hearing the sermon?
  3. The author of Jude was Jesus’s little half-brother (cf. Mark 6:3; 1 Cor. 9:5). Discuss what must have happened to lead him from unbelief to belief. How is Jude’s identity shift a helpful paradigm in considering your own identity shift in Christ??
  4. Jude’s self-description as a “servant” can also be translated as “slave” and is commonly used in the New Testament to refer to serving Jesus (cf. Rom. 1:1; 1 Cor. 9:19; Col. 1:7; 2 Tim. 2:24; Titus 1:1; James 1:1; 2 Peter 1:1). How does this common New Testament term transform our view of our role in God’s mission in living out the Great Commission (Matt. 28:18–20)? How can you live out this mission in your context?
  5. Read Deuteronomy 7:6–8; Exodus 19:4–6; 1 Peter 2:9–10; cf. Revelation 17:14. The idea of being “called” to be a part of God’s family can be a confusing one. What do these passages reveal to us about (1) what it means to be ‘called’? (2) why God calls people? (3) the purpose for which God calls people?
  6. How does “being called” to be a part of God’s family lead to humility? How does it change your view of yourself?
  7. Read 1 John 3:1; Romans 8:12–17. As a group, take some time discussing the difference between relating to God as “Creator” and God as “Father.” How does the gospel transform our relationship to God? How does it change your day-to-day life (cf. 1 John 5:13–15)?
  8. Read Philippians 1:6; Jude 1, 20, 24. Who “keeps” you in the faith? How does the idea of being “kept for Jesus Christ” give you hope when you fall short of obedience to Jesus? What is our responsibility in gospel perseverance?
  9. This Time Tomorrow: How does this passage transform your thoughts, actions, or interactions at this time tomorrow?
