December 15, 2019 Speaker: Jordan Gowing Series: Greater | Christmas from the Book of Hebrews

Topic: Sunday Morning Teaching Passage: Hebrews 10:1–18

How is the original Christmas story greater than any other competing narrative this Christmas? Join us this Sunday at CrossWinds Church in Spencer as we consider the answer from Hebrews 10.

Sermon Discussion Questions

  1. Consider the picture in Hebrews of the Old Testament as a shadow of the New. What are some examples?
  2. What are some ways that the book of Hebrews helps us combat the distractions of the Christmas season and focus on the true Christmas?
  3. What is one highlight from the sermon and one question that you had after hearing the sermon?
  4. Read Hebrews 10:1–4; Romans 3:21–26. Was the purpose of the Law ever to take away sin? Why or why not? (cf. Psalm 51:16–17; Isaiah 1:11–13a; Hosea 6:6)
  5. Read Leviticus 1:3–9. In what ways did the sacrificial system “prick” the conscience of the people of Israel?
  6. What are some ways that people attempt to address their guilty consciences today? Why are all these ways ultimately inadequate?
  7. Read Hebrews 10:5–10; Psalm 40:6–8. Who is speaking in these verses? What is he saying? How does this affect our view of Christmas? How does it affect our view of Scripture?
  8. Read Hebrews 10:11–14; Psalm 110. Contrast the posture of the priests and Jesus. What is the difference? Why is this significant? What should our response be?
  9. Read Hebrews 10:15–18. How can we be sure that Jesus’s sacrifice was enough for our forgiveness?
  10. How does this passage change the way we live?
