Sermon Discussion Questions

  1. In what ways is Jesus’s approach to little children striking to you?
  2. What is one highlight from the sermon and one question that you had after hearing the sermon?
  3. At the beginning of our sermon, Pastor Jordan said, “This passage is not just about children but you and entering the kingdom of God.” How is this passage first and foremost about people entering the kingdom of God?
  4. What are some ways that you can love little children like Jesus, as a part of the church, in your day-to-day lives, and more?
  5. Read Mark 10:13; James 2:1–5. Why do the disciples stop people from bringing children to Jesus? What can we learn from the disciples’ (bad) example? What are some ways that we often are guilty of the same mindset as the disciples today?
  6. Read Mark 10:14. What does it mean that Jesus was “indignant”? Is your view of Jesus big enough for him to possibly be indignant with you from time-to-time? Why do we often downplay this part of Jesus’s character?
  7. What doesn’t Jesus mean when he says to “become like a child”? What does Jesus mean? Use examples from your own experience with children.
  8. Read Mark 10:15. What is Jesus’s warning here? Why is it such a big deal to Jesus that we come like a child?
  9. Read Mark 10:17–22. What are some ways that the rich young ruler came to Jesus—not as a child—but as an adult?
  10. Read Philippians 3:1–11. What is Paul’s spiritual “résumé”? Of what value does he consider it?
  11. What are some areas of your own life where you buy in to our culture’s idol of self-sufficiency? In what ways will you nail it to the cross this week?
