Sermon Discussion Questions
- Have you ever tried to describe an experience and words have failed you (like visiting the Grand Canyon for the first time or something similar)? Briefly share that experience. Why did the words seem inadequate?
- What is one highlight from the sermon and one question that you had after hearing the sermon?
- Read 2 Peter 1:16–21. Why can we be confident of Mark’s account of the transfiguration?
- Read Mark 9:2–7. Imagine being at the transfiguration. What would be your response to those events?
- Read Matthew 17:1–13; Mark 9:2–13; Luke 9:28–36. Compare these three accounts of the Transfiguration. How do they give us a fuller picture of when read together?
- Read Mark 9:1. Imagine that a skeptic friend brings this question up as a reason to doubt your Bible. How would you respond?
- Read Exodus 24:15–16; 34:29–30. What are some of the parallels between the transfiguration and Israel at Sinai?
- Read Matthew 17:2; Exodus 34:29–30; Psalm 104:2. What is the key difference between the story of Sinai and the transfiguration? Why is this significant?
- Read Hebrews 3:1–6. How should consider the Old Testament in light of Jesus’s glory?
- Read Matthew 17:12–13. What are the parallels between John the Baptist’s death and Jesus’s death?
- Read Mark 9:7 and consider this quote from CT Studd: “If Jesus Christ be God and died for me, then no sacrifice can be too great for me to make for him.” What is the only proper response from us to who Jesus is ?
- How will the transfiguration transform the way you live this week?
