Sermon Discussion Questions
- As we have looked at hell and judgment this summer, what is something that has stood out to you? Has your view changed or been reinforced? If so, in what way?
- What is one highlight from the sermon and one question that you had after hearing the sermon?
- Read Romans 1:23, 25, 26. Our sermon began with reminding us of the three exchanges all humanity has made. What are they? How have you seen these “exchanges” in your own life?
- Read 2 Corinthians 5:21. What is the “great exchange” that God has made in response to the three exchanges of humanity?
- Read Matthew 4:3–10. What is the fundamental temptation facing Jesus here in the wilderness? How do we see this temptation facing Jesus over and over again in his life?
- Read Matthew 26:39, 42. What is the content of Jesus’s prayers here? What can we learn from these prayers?
- What does Jesus mean when he refers to “this cup”?
- Read Matthew 27:41–43. In our sermon, we discussed the great irony of these verses. What is this irony? How does God take the taunt of the religious authorities and make it a glorious truth?
- Read Matthew 27:45–50. What does Jesus cry out here? How do these words show us Jesus’s continued trust in God even in the midst of carrying the weight of judgment for sin?
- Read Colossians 1:18–22. In what way(s) does the resurrection vindicate Jesus’s mission and message? How does the resurrection serve as a foretaste of our own resurrection?
- Read Matthew 28:16–20. How does the reality of what Jesus did for us motivate us to missions?
