Sermon Discussion Questions

  1. What is one highlight from the sermon and one question that you had after hearing the sermon?
  2. Why is it so difficult to discover God’s will for our lives? What are some of the reasons why people are so preoccupied with this question? Why is this question one that is relatively unique to our age?
  3. Read Esther 4:13–16. What does the story of Esther teach us about following God’s will and stepping out in faith with courage?
  4. Read 1 Timothy 2:3–4; 2 Peter 3:9. What is God’s will for you and for every other person? Why is this the most important question to ask when seeking God’s will?
  5. Break into groups and divide up the following passages: Ephesians 4:17–24; 4:25–32; 5:1–2; 5:3–6; 5:7–14; 5:15–21. What do these sections teach us about what it looks like to live a  “Spirit-filled life”?
  6. Read Acts 6:7; 8:14; 11:1; 12:24. What connection does the book of Acts make with the work of the Holy Spirit? How can we become increasingly filled with the Spirit today?
  7. Read 1 Thessalonians 4:3, 7. What does this passage reveal about God’s will for your life?
  8. Read Psalm 37:4; Proverbs 3:5–6. If we are pursuing God, then God invites us to do our “heart’s desire” when pursuing his will. Consider a big decision from your life. Did you have this mindset? How would your decision-making process have been different if you did?
  9. What are some ways that you can pursue the Spirit-filled life and holiness this week?
