Sermon Discussion Questions

  1. Read Col. 2:6. What does it mean to receive “Christ Jesus” as Lord? What does it look like for Jesus to be Lord of our lives?
  2. Read Col. 2:7; cf. Psalm 1; Eph. 2:18–22. Paul uses several images to describe the Christian life. What are they? How are these images appropriate in showing us how to live as faithful witnesses?
  3. Read Col. 2:8. What are some modern-day “philosophies” that promise fulfillment but are really just “empty deceit”? Why are these so tempting to follow?
  4. Paul states that these alternative “philosophies” are rooted in the demonic. Have you ever considered that before? Does this change your mindset about secularism and other philosophies? How?
  5. Read Col. 2:9–10. In contrast to the “emptiness” of these “philosophies” promising fullness, Jesus is the “fullness” of deity. How do we respond to the temptation of “philosophies” promising fullness?
  6. Read Col. 2:10–14. Paul again stresses our union with Christ. How does Christ’s victory on the cross grant us victory?
  7. Read Rom. 6:3–6. How does baptism symbolize our union with Christ?
  8. Read Col. 2:15. When we think of Jesus’s work on the cross, we tend to primarily think of what his death accomplished in bringing us salvation. Here we see that Jesus’s death also proved God’s authority over opposing spirits. In what ways is this “bigger perspective” on the work of Jesus helpful for us? In what ways is it “new” for you? How does Jesus’s victory over opposing spirits encouraging to us?
  9. Read Col. 2:13–14. Paul states that our sins against God continue to pile up a debt to God that we cannot owe, but that this debt has been cancelled by the cross. Take some time to think about the sin for which you could not pay but for which Jesus paid it all. Spend some time thanking God together as a group.
