Sermon Discussion Questions
- With Thanksgiving later this week, what are you thankful for? Take some time to share with one another not only physical blessings but spiritual things as well.
- What is one highlight from the sermon and one question that you had after hearing the sermon?
- Our sermon began with a picture of the evangelical church and its tendency to seek after power and prominence as a key to the spread of the gospel. What are some ways that the church does this? Why is such an approach unhelpful?
- Read Mark 10:32–34; 14:43–50; 14:53–64; 15:1–5; 15:6–15; 15:16–20; 15:33–39; 16:6. What does Jesus describe in his final prediction of his crucifixion? How does the rest of Mark bear witness to this?
- Read Mark 10:33; Acts 2:22–24. What does it mean that Jesus is “delivered over”? Who is the one who is “delivering” Jesus over? Why is this important to recognize?
- Mark 10:35–37. What is the request of James and John? What are some ways that we seek our own glory as well?
- After considering the request of James and John, what are some less-than-admirable things that you have sought or are seeking from Jesus?
- Read Mark 10:41–42. What are some ways that we see this view of “power” and “greatness” in the world today? How do we see it in the church?
- Read Mark 10:43–44. In contrast to our own exaltation, what should we do? What are some ways that we can become more like servants in our lives?
- Read Mark 10:45. What is the significance of this verse, as we approach Christmas?
- How does this passage change the way you live this week?
